I just got Randy Gage’s latest blog post and I think it is particularly appropriate since we are gong into the new year. How is it that you are going to get 5 new superstars in 2011? Busting Out in 2011

So here’s a question for you…

How would you like to have five new team members that meet the following criteria?  They:

Work the business five nights a week;
Practice daily self-development;
Attend all local and major functions;
Promote all functions to the team;
Practice the core qualities;
Have a strong product culture and customer base;
Submit a counseling form every month; and,
Follow the system religiously.

Imagine how fast you would bust out in 2011 with five new team members like that!  So how do you get them?

I’m afraid you’re not going to like the answer…

To get team members like that – you have to be a team member like that!   So how you doing on that?

Now if you’re not where you want to be, let’s try something different.  No more guilt.  No more beating yourself up.  No more attacking your self worth.

Many people do not understand the difference between having just a dream and having a real vision of what you want to create but the difference is huge. When you are dreaming you are removed, you are wishing for something to be. It is not real. It is not part of you. Kind of like being at your job and wishing you were sitting on a nice warm beach with palm trees somewhere. This will not get the job done.

So, what are you to do? You must develop vision.

What is vision?

Vision is what allows you to fully experience where you want to be in your life before you get there. You can see it, smell it, taste it, feel it, hear it, touch it before it actually exists. In your day to day being, you don’t experience the rote that is in front of you – you experience your vision of where you intend to be even though it does not yet exist in our 3-dimensions – as though you are already there.

What you are doing is training your subconscious mind.

Did you know that your subconscious can’t tell the difference between a “real” event and a “visualized” event as we have described? This fact is used all the time in training for peak performance in sports – just ask the Utah Jazz!

Take advantage of this fact. What your subconscious believes to be true it will create for you. It will make you recognize the things of which you should take advantage to reach your vision – your big dreams. Pay attention and take advantage of those hints your mind is giving you.

This is the major tool that I used to get where I am now. That and solid action. I kept that vision in front of me continuously – tasting, feeling, smelling, hearing, feeling, and seeing it continuously.

Do that and persist and you will be well on your way!

Once you have identified what your most profitable brand should be and who your optimal target market is [these issues will be addressed in separate posts] you need to “get yourself out there”.

Exactly what do you need and how do you do this?

1. Get yourself an appropriate domain name. You can register it through GoDaddy. Once you have your blog or web site set up you will be able to point your domain name to either one. This is very easily done and if you can’t figure it out, the live 24/7 support at GoDaddy is great! [I have used it too many times ] Make sure you use the domain masking feature. This will let www.yourdomain.wordpress.com to appear as www.yourdomain.com – gives a much better first impression.

2. Sign up for a marketing engine to support your efforts. I like MLSP. It has material that can get the newbie off to a rapid start yet is ultimately customizable so you can brand yourself as whatever you like. Subscribing to such a flexible system saves you the time and expense to create your own. When it comes to the “buy or build” decision here, the optimal decision is clearly to “buy”!

3. Get yourself your own autoresponder. I like Aweber. If your visitors like what they see they will want to keep up with what is new on your blog and what you have to say. The autoresponder is ideal for this. You can send messages out when you make a new post and you can have your autoresponder loaded up with a free training program [you can start with the ones that come with MLSP] or the like to give additional value to your people. This way, you will can keep in touch with your people.

4. Drive people interested in your niche to your automated marketing system – the one being powered by the marketing engine we talked about above. You can do this in many ways – via Twitter, other social media marketing, on and off-line advertising and the like. A second wonderful feature of MLSP is the training on how to do these things that comes with the system. You will find that people will begin to opt in and, through your autoresponder emails, you will begin to build a relationship with them and they will begin to know and love you.

5. Set up your blog. Your blog can be set up for free and easily on wordpress.com. It can be stand-alone when you start out and can later be integrated with your web site if and when you set one up.

You will want to do this because when you are driving traffic people will want to know more about you. A blog is an ideal solution. You can have its URL as part of your signature file in your autoresponder emails and you can get it to pop up in the search engines when people search on your name. This will be an additional way to make a great impression and build your identity.

You will want to update your blog at regular intervals with content that is consistent to your brand. Make sure you stay true to your brand. If you stray you will confuse your audience. Also, your content does not all have to be written by you. You can post materials from other sources as long as it supports your brand [it is imperative to credit to the original source]. You can also invite others to be guest authors.

Finally, make sure that you have a way to capture your users’ information so you can continue to build your marketing list. You can easily create an opt-in box through your autoresponder service for this purpose.

6. Additionally you can further brand yourself in your niche through other media – like video and audio. This kind of live media is excellent at making your visitors identify with you. You may not be able to see them but they can certainly see you!

Make video posts of your niche content on your blog, use your own videos in your marketing engine, post audios of trainings, interviews with market leaders and the like.

And, of course, make sure you also have a good looking photo of yourself to use in your materials – well groomed, smiling, looking at the camera, and no glasses – people want to see your eyes!

Using these media will show your personality to your people and will also show them that you really exist and are not some machine.

Our politically correct schools do not tell us the real story. When I was in school many years ago, the story we got was that the pilgrims gave thanks to the American Indians who had shown them how to plant corn, etc. Yeah, right.

What Thanksgiving really commemorates is the spectacular success of the shift to capitalism that came on the heels of the dismal failure of the collectivist [socialist] system in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts [yes, Common Wealth - think about what that actually means - yeah . . .]. The year was 1623.

You see, from 1620 until the spring of 1623, the Plymouth Bay Colony operated on collectivist principles. Everything produced was put into a common pool and people were rationed what had been produced according to their “need” [whatever that means]. You can imagine the result: low production which led to lack and starvation.

Then, in the spring of 1623, Governor Bradford had figured it out. So, what did he do? He did an experiment. He gave each family a plot of land for them to use as they saw fit. They were able to keep what they produced and do with it as they wished. All of a sudden, people that were too “sick”,”old”,”tired”, etc. decided they were able to work.

And, what was the result? Abundance.

All this information is documented in Governor Bradford’s history “Of Plimoth Plantation”.

“All this while no supply was heard of, neither knew they when they might expect any. So they began to think how they might raise as much corn as they could, and obtain a better crop than they had done, that they might not still thus languish in misery. At length, after much debate of things, the Governor (with the advice of the chiefest amongst them) gave way that they should set corn every man for his own particular, and in that regard trust to themselves; in all other thing to go on in the general way as before. And so assigned to every family a parcel of land, according to the proportion of their number, for that end, only for present use (but made no division for inheritance) and ranged all boys and youth under some family. This had very good success, for it made all hands very industrious, so as much more corn was planted than otherwise would have been by any means the Governor or any other could use, and saved him a great deal of trouble, and gave far better content. The women now went willingly into the field, and took their little ones with them to set corn; which before would allege weakness and inability; whom to have compelled would have been thought great tyranny and oppression.

The experience that was had in this common course and condition, tried sundry years and that amongst godly and sober men, may well evince the vanity of that conceit of Plato’s and other ancients applauded by some of later times; and that the taking away of property and bringing in community into a commonwealth would make them happy and flourishing; as if they were wiser than God. For this community (so far as it was) was found to breed much confusion and discontent and retard much employment that would have been to their benefit and comfort. For the young men, that were most able and fit for labor and service, did repine that they should spend their time and strength to work for other men’s wives and children without any recompense. The strong, or man of parts, had no more in division of victuals and clothes than he that was weak and not able to do a quarter the other could; this was thought injustice. The aged and graver men to be ranked and equalized in labors and victuals, clothes etc., with the meaner and younger sort, thought it some indignity and disrespect unto them. And for men’s wives to be commanded to do service for other men, as dressing their meat, washing their clothes, etc., they deemed it a kind of slavery, neither could many husbands well brook it.”

Think about what this means in the context of what is going on in our country today. We need to, first, know history and, then, we need to learn from it. Let’s do everything we can to avoid repeating the dismal failures.

There are a number of categories of human needs. If you know what they are, you know what you need to look for.  If you know what to look for, you can find them.  If you can find them, [and you can articulate how you and your opportunity can fill them] you will be able to relate to people better.  If you can relate to people better, you will increase your recruiting rate.  If you deliver on the promise to fulfill the person’s need, you will increase your retention rate.  If you know how to do this, you can duplicate it through your organization.

Is this important for your business?  I think so!

Human needs can be separated into 9 categories.  In no particular order, people have the need for:

• Security
• Acceptance
• Community
• Exchange
• Expression
• Expansion
• Power
• Adventure
• Freedom

Generally, people have three primary needs and the others are secondary.  Your job is to identify the three primary needs for each person with whom you are dealing.  This will tell you what you have to know to optimize your dealings with them.  You will be able to communicate with them more effectively.  You will find that you will have more natural rapport with people that share your needs. If you do not share needs, you will have to create the rapport.  Interesting . . . [note:  People that do not have their needs met can behave in "less than optimal" ways.  This is a "hint".  Fix it.]

Let’s have a brief look at how these 9 needs can manifest themselves.

1. Security.  They needs to feel “safe, feel protected.  They need predictability.  This can manifest differently in different people. Security can mean many things:

• Having a “good job”
• Owning a house “free and clear”
• Having a “big bank account”
• Not having any debt
• Living in a “secure” community
• Having a car on which they can depend
• Carrying sufficient health, life, liability insurance

2. Acceptance. This is the need to be accepted by others – belonging.  These are people that like:

• Joining clubs
• Doing things to make others feel good
• Building relationships with the neighbors, other kids’ parents, etc.
• They are always “nice”
• They are very tolerant
• They are always “helping”
• They work towards the inclusion of “others”

3. Community.  These are people that like to be around other people. They love get togethers. They  can maintain lots of relationships. Here is what you might see:

• Somebody who hosts lots of parties
• Someone at the center of the office activity
• A person who belongs to many clubs
• Someone who coordinates some kind of campaign
• Someone who hosts groups at their home [family, social or business]
• Someone who will run for office

4. Exchange. These people need to trade information and knowledge with others. They like to communicate.  For instance:

• They love to debate
• They love to stay in touch with everyone
• They love to work with people towards a common goal
• They want to make sure people are treated “fairly”
• Working on comittes is good
• The build and maintain an active network of contacts
• They love networking
• They can share deep relationships with people with whom they perceive they can communicate

5. Expression. Expressives need to be seen, heard, felt. They are often artistic.  They have the need to express themselves through words, actions, dress, art and self-creations of all types. They manifest through:

• Writing
• Creating art
• Dance
• Design
• Teaching arts to children
• Speaking on the arts
• Writing about the arts

6. Expansion. This is the need to create.  Somebody with the need for expansion might:

• Build a business
• Expand a business
• Expand an important collection
• Protect the environment
• Create new knowledge
• Be a visionary
• Create something nobody else has ever thought of

7. Power. This is all about authority and responsibility. These people may be:

• The Boss
• The political leader
• A speaker
• Responsible for people, projects, events, situations, projects
• Authorities on something
• Somebody people look upon as somebody to follow

8. Adventure. These people love to have an adrenaline rush, new experiences, travel, have drama in their life, to have a sense of anticipation about upcoming events. People who need adventure can be found:

• Starting a new company
• Being an entrepreneur
• Having a job that moves them around
• Being early adopters
• Setting some record
• Planning a new trip

9. Freedom. These people love independence and spontaneity. They need to have choices and to feel in control of making those choices. They need to be able to:

• Make their own choices
• Select the business they want
• Select the lifestyle they want
• Move around when they want
• Make their own decisions
• Be self-sufficient
• Look how they want
• Follow the rules that they want
• Be with whomever they want

So how do you find these needs?  Well, after building rapport with the person, use questioning.  I don’t mean interrogation.  I mean relationship building questioning to see what is important to them.  You can formulate your questions if you know how these needs can manifest themselves.   You can formulate them based on the characteristics of each need.  Start with the general and then get more specific. And listen carefully.

Note that people often only question others in a way that reflects their own needs.  This will keep you from connecting with some two thirds of the population!  Surely you don’t want that!  Go through and identify your own needs but then set them aside.  Find the needs of your people and communicate to them under those terms.

Once you are able to get at what people’s real needs are, you will be able to connect with them more easily.  You will be able to communicate with them in a way they can internalize.  Once they see that their basic needs can be met through what you are offering them you will begin to talk to them about their dreams and what they really want to accomplish.  When you get to that point you will have a business partner for life.
